Welcome to our first edition of the FARMS Quarterly Newsletter. As we progress through our innovation, collaboration, and growth journey, I am inspired by our ecosystem's commitment and strides toward sustainable, resilient food systems.

At FARMS, our mission to solve local food security challenges using scalable technologies that drive equitable workforce and economic opportunities is more relevant than ever. I am proud of the unique partnerships we are fostering to address food security challenges and inspire technological innovation. These partnerships are dedicated to co-creating solutions that address immediate food security needs and lay a foundation for sustainable, scalable products, services, and practices that can be adapted and commercialized to support resilient food systems for communities nationally and across the globe.

In this edition, we are excited to share the FARMS mission and vision and a look at the evolving landscape of agriculture innovation. Each quarter we will share updates on our recent projects, insights from our strategic partners, and our impact statements on rural economic and workforce achievements.

What is FARMS?

The North Dakota Advanced Agriculture Technology Engine, also known as FARMS, is one of 10 National Science Foundation-funded engines across the country. 

The NSF Engines program envisions spurring economic growth in regions that have not fully participated in the technology boom of the past few decades. 

The FARMS engine addresses the pressing challenges around rural food security. By leveraging North Dakota's resources and expertise in agriculture, we aim to become a national model for rural innovation and equitable economic advancement. 

Our efforts focus on integrating and advancing innovative technology such as precision farming and data/AI-driven agriculture with traditional agricultural practices. This combination enables us to focus on sustainable, scalable solutions tailored for rural communities, ensuring that local food security challenges are solved by advancing innovative technology while contributing to replicable best practices for equitable economic growth and resilience at the national level.

Why Food Security?

In North Dakota, food security is influenced by many economic, environmental, and policy factors. Addressing these issues requires a collaborative effort that involves local governments, communities, Tribal Nations, and technological innovators.
